App Giveaway: YouMail for iPhone subscription

YouMail is a alternative to the iPhone’s built-in visual voicemail. It lets you listen to your voicemail on any device, computer, or email account. It also has a much a more sophisticated caller ID that includes the caller’s name and location.

The above mentioned features are available for free, but for a monthly fee, you can have your voicemails transcribed into text so that you can read them instead of listen to them. This transcription is human-powered, so it is extremely accurate.

If you were to ask me what I use my iPhone for, I’d spatter off at least ten different things I regularly do, but “to make calls” would not be on the list. Needless to say, I hate voicemail and would much rather someone text me than leave me a voicemail. In fact, I rarely actually listen my voicemail and instead just shoot the person a text asking what’s up.

I need a YouMail subscription.

YouMail is more powerful and more fun than your iPhone visual voicemail.

  • Scroll and play on any device: iPhone, iPod, iPad, computer, or e-mail account.
  • Visual caller ID, shows caller photos, name, and city and state, even when they’re not in your address book!
  • Smart greetings wows callers, automatically greeting them by name.
  • Total ownership of your voicemail. You can easily save important messages forever, neatly organized in folders, and easily forward them to others.
  • Easy contact backup and sync with facebook! Access your contacts on any device.
  • Read your voice mail within the app or by e-mail, without ever having to listen to it. (subscription required)

Giveaway

The good folks at YouMail have given us three subscriptions for a year of YouMail’s basic service (a 0 value!) to giveaway to our awesome readers! For a chance to win, let us know about how many voicemails you get per day (or week) that you’d rather read than listen to.

YouMail is available on the iPhone for free.

How to FaceTime on iPhone 4

FaceTime, Apple’s video-chatting technology introduced with the iPhone 4[1], is one of the most exciting features of that device (and the other devices it runs on, like the iPad 2[2] and 4th gen. iPod touch). Using FaceTime[3] is fairly easy, but there are a few requirements that you must have in place in order to use FaceTime on iPhone 4.
Time Required: A few seconds

Here’s How:

  1. Begin by ensuring that FaceTime is turned on for your iPhone 4. Do this by tapping the Settings app on your home screen. Scroll down to Phone (or, in some versions of the iOS, FaceTime) and tap it. Move the FaceTime slider to On.
  2. FaceTime calls can only be made when the iPhone is connected to a Wi-Fi network (AT&T and Verizon currently block FaceTime calls over their 3G cellular networks). Connect your iPhone to a Wi-Fi network[4].
  3. FaceTime calls can also only be made to other iPhone 4s, 4th gen. iPod touches[5], iPad 2s, or Macs that have FaceTime activated and are connected to Wi-Fi networks (or, in the case of Macs, Ethernet networks). If the FaceTime icon has a question mark on it when you place your call, it may be because the person you’re calling can’t accept a FaceTime call for one of those reasons.
  4. Once those requirements are met, there are two ways to FaceTime someone. First, you can simply call them as your normally would and tap the FaceTime icon when it lights up after the call connects.

Alternatively, you can browse through your iPhone address book, find the person, tap on them, and tap the FaceTime button on their page in your address book.

  5. Your FaceTime call will begin just like a regular call, except that your camera will turn on and you’ll see yourself. The person you’re placing the call to will have the chance to accept or deny your call by tapping an onscreen button (you’ll have this same option if someone FaceTimes you).

If they accept it, FaceTime will send video from your camera to them and vice versa. Both a shot of your and the person you’re talking to will be on screen at the same time.

  6. End a FaceTime call by tapping the End button on the bottom of the screen.

Acting president of HTC America claims the iPhone is no longer cool

Martin Fichter, the acting president of HTC America has been talking at the Mobile Future Forward conference in Seattle. He claims that college kids no longer find the iPhone to be cool. The information that he shares is not exactly based on hard facts; he talked with a few of the kids on his daughter’s floor and came to this rather strange conclusion!

“Apple is innovating. Samsung is innovating. We are innovating. Everybody is innovating. And everybody is doing different things for the end consumers. I brought my daughter back to college — she’s down in Portland at Reed — and I talked to a few of the kids on her floor. And none of them has an iPhone because they told me: ‘My dad has an iPhone.’ There’s an interesting thing that’s going on in the market. The iPhone becomes a little less cool than it was. They were carrying HTCs. They were carrying Samsungs. They were even carrying some Chinese manufacture’s devices. If you look at a college campus, Mac Book Airs are cool. iPhones are not that cool anymore. We here are using iPhones, but our kids don’t find them that cool anymore.”

I discussed this at length with my 12 year old daughter this morning and she sort of agreed with the points being made. Blackberry appears to be the chosen platform at her school although she did say that iPhones were still very  highly desired. The cost and delicate nature of an iPhone does appear to deter many parents from providing them to their kids!

What do you think? Is the iPhone losing the coolness factor with the younger generation?
