Readability now available on the iPhone and iPad

The popular reading platform Readability has finally made it’s way to the iPhone and iPad and boy is it beautiful. Readability transforms web pages into a clean, simple reading view that can be read later on your iPhone, iPad, or computer. Once you’ve synced over your articles, you don’t even need to be online to read them.
Readability is integrated with a lot of different apps, including Reeder, Tweetbot, Early Edition 2, Twitterrific, and Echofon. You can also install a bookmarklet to your web browser on your computer. The idea is that if you come across an article that you know you want to read later, you can do so while using any of these apps and continue on with the task at hand knowing that the article will be waiting for you when you’re ready to read it.
The typography in Readability for iPhone and iPad is gorgeous. It comes with 5 different fonts by Hoefler & Frere-Jones, making reading a truly pleasurable experience. In addition to customizing the font type, you can also adjust the size, contrast and margins to your liking.
Readability also has some nice gestures making switching between articles, deleting, and marking as read or favorites a breeze. It’s also equipped with it’s own browser so that you can search for and add articles directly within the app. And of course, you can share your favorite articles with Facebook and Twitter.
Readability is a free service that is free to download, but if you want to give back to the websites that you frequent, you can sign up for a /month subscription. 70% of your contributions will go back to the writers or publishers you read with Readability. It’s a great way to support your favorite sites.
Using iPhone Warranty Checker
Keeping track of the exact date when we bought our iPhones or iPods isn’t something many of us need to worry about–except when a device needs to be repaired. Then you need to know when it was purchased so you can find out whether it’s still covered by warranty or if you’ll have to pay for the repair.
Apple makes checking the warranty of any iPod, iPhone, or iPad easy with a warranty checker tool on its website.
- Begin using the warranty checker by going to https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do[1]
- Next, you’ll need to enter the serial number of the device whose warranty you want to check. There are two ways to find this:
- In the devices About menu (found in Settings on devices running iOS).
- Sync the device[2]; the serial number will be at the top of the management screen next to the image.
- Enter the serial number of the warranty checker and click the “Continue” button.
- When you do this, you’ll see 5 pieces of information:
- The type of device it is
- Whether the device is registered with Apple
- Has telephone support expired or not (free telephone support is often available for a limited time after the device was been purchased; when it expires, telephone support costs per call)
- Is the device still in warranty for repairs and service
- Is the device eligible to have its warranty extended via AppleCare[3]
If the device isn’t registered, coverage is expired, or AppleCare is available, click the button to the right of that item to take action.
Now that you know whether your device is still under warranty or not, you can either coordinate a repair using the tools on that page or schedule an appointment to take your device to the Genius Bar[4] at your nearest Apple Store.

C25K iPhone App Review
The Good
- Easy-to-follow plan for beginners
- Integrated music playlist
- Twitter/Facebook integration
The Bad
- GPS tracking costs extra
- No option to use GPS independently
Purchase at iTunes[1]
I recently received a question from a reader about the best running app for beginners. I discuss several options in our list of the best iPhone running apps[2], but while these apps can track your run, they don’t tell you how much to run or how often. The C25K app (US.99) is a great choice for new runners, as it combines an easy-to-follow beginner’s plan with GPS tracking capabilities.
What is C25K?
C25K (Couch to 5K) is a respected beginner’s plan with the goal of getting you off the coach and running a 5K (3.1 miles) in nine weeks. The training plan includes three workouts per week. Starting on the first day of week one, you’ll alternate 60 seconds of running with 90 seconds of walking for 20 minutes, plus a five-minute warm-up and five-minute cool down. As the weeks progress, you’ll start running more and walking less until you are jogging for a full 30 minutes.
When you launch the C25K app, you can select the appropriate workout using the slider along the bottom of the screen. Tap ‘Start’ on the workout page, and voice prompts will guide you through you run. The app tells you everything, including when to walk and when to run. After you complete a workout, a small button listed underneath will turn green, which makes it easy to keep track of which workouts you’ve already completed.
Playing Music While Running
The C25K app integrates with your iPod[3] so you can listen to music while you run. Unlike other running apps, you’ll have to create a new playlist[4] within the app instead of using your existing playlists. Fortunately, the process is really easy and you can select multiple songs at once from your iPod library.
I love that you can control your music right from the workout page, including skipping songs or pausing your playlist. You can even control the volume without interrupting your workout. Facebook[5] and Twitter[6] integration is another plus. The app will automatically share your workout progress with friends if you enable it in the settings menu.
Tracking Pace and Distance
Like most running apps, C25K also has a GPS component. By taking advantage of the iPhone’s built-in GPS[7], the C25K can track your distance, pace, and calories. However, you’ll have to pay extra for this module (US.99) via an in-app purchase. The app displays pace, distance, and average pace (time is included whether or not you buy the GPS module) in pretty small numbers, so they’re not the easiest to see when you are running.
The GPS portion of the C25K app works very well — it is accurate and quick to establish a connection. Unfortunately, I do have a few nitpicky complaints. For one, the GPS tracking automatically stops when the C25K workout is complete. That’s fine, but if you feel like walking or running a bit longer one day, the app won’t be tracking your distance or pace.
You also can’t use the GPS tracking independently of the C25K workout schedule. Once you complete the nine-week training plan, there are options for a 30-minute or 45-minute run, but what if you want to run for an hour? The C25K app would be more valuable over the long haul if you could use it as a standalone GPS tracker once the training plan is complete.
The Bottom Line
I highly recommend the C25K app for beginners. The training plan is a smart way to gradually build up your running mileage, and the app includes a bunch of nifty features. It’s also easy to use and doesn’t cost that much. However, since the C25K app limits how you can use the GPS tracker, you’ll probably want to spring for another running app — like Runmeter GPS or RunKeeper Pro — when you complete the training plan. Overall rating: 4 stars out of 5. [8][9]
What You’ll Need
The C25K app works with the iPod touch[10] and iPhone[11], but you’ll need a GPS-enabled device to purchase the GPS tracking module. The app requires iOS 3.0[12] or later.

Best iPhone apps and accessories for running and jogging

“Whether you’re new to jogging or are a seasoned marathoner, there are tons of great iPhone apps and accessories will help you to be the best runner you can possibly be.”
The iPhone is the perfect companion for those looking to get into jogging or running, or those looking to keep their long-term training fun and fresh. Since it’s health and Fitness month[1] here at iMore and the Mobile Nations network, we’re going to take a look a the very best accessories and apps that’ll help you get the most out of your experience.
One important thing to remember before getting started is to always keep yourself properly hydrated when going on a run. Keeping a water bottle with you is a great idea, but if you can’t, make sure to get a good amount of hydration during your warmup and cool down periods. The fact is, when you run, you sweat. A lot. Whether it’s just a quick jog or a long, 10-15 mile run, proper hydration is absolutely essential to keeping your body going without over-stressing your cardiovascular system.
Tune Belt Sport Armband for iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S
Some runners might prefer an armband over a belt case, and if so, the Tune Belt Sport Armband is your go-to
The Tune Best Armband is the best armband out there for both heavy running and light jogging. It features a protective window cover and washable material, with support for right side up or upside down orientation to match every type of workout you can imagine. Attach it to your arm or even your thigh with the EX3 length extender pushing it beyond the default 9-17 inch adjustment options if needed (EX3 sold separately). The dual-orientation also makes for a more convenient way to access your iPhone without requiring you to remove it from the armband. Just extend your arm up to eye level, and you can navigate through your iPhone without the hassle of stopping, removing it from the case, and tapping through to what you need.
The great thing about the Tune Best Armband is the stretchable form-fitting material, which supports newer iPhone models as well as the older, bulkier iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS. You’ll never have to stress about your iPhone being exposed to water damage if you’re running out in the rain or snow with the water-proof design, and the protective front cover ensures a scratch-resistant environment in case you happen to slip or fall while you’re out on a jog in less than ideal weather.
For safety nuts, the Tune Best Armband includes a highly reflective logo for night jogging, and you won’t have to worry about your earbud cord getting in the way with the built-in cord organizer. Just wrap your earbud cable around the flap for a tangle-free experience! For runners, the Tune Belt Sport Armband is definitely the way to go.
- Protective cover with waterproof design
- Earbud cord organizer for tangle-free running
- Form fitting to older iPhones
- Reflective logo for safety

RunKeeper is quite possibly the best app out there for runners. RunKeeper uses the GPS included in the iPhone to measure distance, elevation, duration, speed and pace of your run, and more. RunKeeper also comes with the following features:
- Social Network Sharing
- Personalized Dashboard
- Target Pace with built-in coaching (via headphones)
- Interval workouts/runs
The app also includes full iPod integration, so you won’t have to jump out of the app and into music library in order to change tracks or switch to another playlist.
Breakdown of time and speed for each mile you’ve run and access playlists for quick and easy changeovers
In addition, RunKeeper includes audio prompts that cycle through your headphones to give you information and updates on your run without any user input required. If you’re new to running or if you’ve been running for a while, RunKeeper is definitely the first app you’ll want to look into.

iMapMyRun is a more basic running app that does exactly what the title implies. It maps your run and gives you information related to your run, such as pace, distance, caloric output, nutrition information, elevation, heart rate stats and features a live route map update in real-time as you go.
The app offers great social integration as well, so if you’re into building up your bragging rights amongst fellow runners, iMapMyRun+ offers an always up-to-date list of the latest runs you or your friends have been on.

Create beautiful timeline covers with Cover Photo Maker for Facebook Pro+ for iPhone

It’s not long before Facebook will require everyone to switch to the new timeline profiles and Cover Photo Maker for Facebook is here to help you design the perfect header for your timeline.
It comes equipped with 16 templates sized perfectly for a Facebook Cover photo. Each template is a collage of 1-5 photos with customization of border thickness and color. For even more personalization, Cover Photo Maker for Facebook has over 30 unique and stylized fonts for text. When your cover is ready, you can upload it directly to Facebook, email it, or save it to your camera roll.
Cover Photo Maker for Facebook is very easy to use and is a quick and easy way to create a unique cover for your Facebook timeline. However, it’s not quite perfect. The biggest disappointment being that the resolution of the final image leaves a lot to be desired. I’m a photo snob, though, so the results may be more than satisfying for someone else.
It would also be nice if the app overlaid a box exactly where you’d expect your profile photo to be, so that can make sure none of the important elements of your cover photo will be hidden behind your profile picture.
If anyone picks this one up, we’d love to see your results in the iMore Photography Forum[1]!
